New Zealand
2004 · Directed by Taika Waititi · 12 min
Two children wait in separate parked cars outside a pub in a small New Zealand town while the adults drink inside. Shot in black and white, this twelve-minute short is deadpan, funny and quietly observant.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of twenty-first-century New Zealand short filmmaking and an early signal of the confident, humane Māori comedy that Waititi later carried into international cinema.
