In a future where a virus has driven the few survivors underground, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about its origins. Terry Gilliam turns the mission into a disorienting, darkly funny puzzle about sanity, memory and who can be believed.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining mid-1990s science fiction film, and a bridge between 1980s time-travel action and the puzzle-box cinema of the following decade.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a mystery about perception, where the question is less what will happen than whom, and what, the film wants you to believe.
