A male model and his influencer partner are invited aboard a luxury cruise for the very rich. Ruben Östlund's deadpan satire watches beauty, money and good manners under a magnifying glass, in scenes that run a little longer than anyone would like.
Why it matters in cinema history
The film shows how European art cinema took up the comic, class-conscious satire that also drove Parasite and other hits of the late 2010s, and did it at festival-winning level.
Watch with intention
Watch each scene as a small social experiment: someone wants something, and the film waits to see who flinches first.
