Decades after his Top Gun days, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, still a Navy test pilot, is sent back to the elite flight school to prepare a squad of young pilots for a mission with almost no margin for error. Old rivalries and old promises come with him.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the modern legacy sequel and of the 2020s argument for practical, in-camera action over digital spectacle, in the tradition of Hollywood aviation films going back to Wings.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about the gap between a skill and a person: what a lifetime of flying has cost Maverick, and what it can still teach.
