Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 21st-century European art cinema, and a major example of the German-language 'cringe' comedy of manners. It stretched what a comedy could be in length, tone and emotional ambition.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of two people who have lost the language to talk to each other, and who each look for a substitute.
