Alexia has carried a titanium plate in her skull since a childhood car crash, and machines have shaped her life ever since. Julia Ducournau's second feature is a violent, unpredictable blend of body horror and drama that rewards viewers who let it surprise them.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of early twenty-first-century French genre cinema, it showed that body horror, long kept at the margins of festival culture, could win the highest prize in art cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as a study of bodies and surfaces, skin, metal and light, rather than as a plot that must add up neatly.
