2007 · Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson · 158 min
In the early years of the twentieth century, a self-made prospector pushes from silver mining into the new business of oil. Paul Thomas Anderson's epic is slow, severe and darkly funny, built around a towering performance and an unsettling score.
Why it matters in cinema history
A cornerstone of twenty-first-century American auteur cinema, it revived the large-scale, character-driven epic of the 1950s and 1970s for a modern audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a portrait built through physical detail and sound: let what Plainview does, and how he sounds when he speaks, tell you who he is.
