In 1940s occupied Poland, a German family tends its garden, hosts guests and plans for the future in a comfortable house. The father is the commandant of Auschwitz, and the camp lies just beyond their garden wall. The film observes the household from a cool, steady distance.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of modern art cinema's approach to the Holocaust, it follows the tradition of withholding images and puts the viewer's complicity at the centre. Its off-screen strategy has become a key reference point in debates about how atrocity should be shown.
