Wallace, an inventor of cheerfully impractical gadgets, is short of money and takes in a lodger. Gromit, his silent and far more sensible dog, is not convinced. A half-hour comedy in handmade clay, set in a cosy northern English home.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of British animation and of stop-motion generally, it showed that a short, handmade, dialogue-light film could win a mass audience and an Oscar in the age of digital effects.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a silent comedy in which Gromit's eyes do the talking and every object in the house is a possible gag.
