Norwegian (Verdens verste menneske)
2021 · Directed by Joachim Trier · 128 min
Julie is nearing thirty in Oslo and keeps changing direction: in her studies, her work and her sense of what she wants. Told in twelve chapters with a prologue and epilogue, it is a funny, candid and tender portrait of a woman trying to work out which life is hers.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 2020s European art cinema, it showed that the intimate, novelistic character study could still reach a wide international audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a portrait of a person still drafting herself, where the comedy comes from her self-doubt rather than from jokes.
