American
2013 · Directed by Martin Scorsese · 180 min
A young stockbroker with enormous hunger and a gift for persuasion builds a brokerage on Long Island and a lifestyle to match. Scorsese tells it as a loud, fast, darkly funny confession, narrated by the man himself and addressed straight to the audience.
Why it matters in cinema history
A major late work by one of the central figures of New Hollywood, and a defining film about the culture of American finance after the 2008 crash. It extends the Scorsese crime film into satire.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story told by a salesman: everything you see is the narrator's pitch to you.
