Ireland, 1920. A young doctor about to leave for a hospital post in London is drawn into the guerrilla campaign against British rule that is unfolding around his home in County Cork. Ken Loach's drama is sober, unglamorous and rooted in the countryside.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of Loach's long career of social-realist filmmaking, and one of the most prominent modern European films to treat Irish republican history seriously for an international audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about how people argue and decide under pressure, not only about who fights whom.
