Western
American
1969 · Directed by Sam Peckinpah · 145 min
In 1913, an ageing gang of outlaws crosses into Mexico after a robbery goes badly wrong. The West they knew is giving way to railroads, machine guns and automobiles, and the job ahead may be their last. Sam Peckinpah's western is violent, elegiac and unsentimental.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the New Hollywood era and of the revisionist western, it marked the point where the genre's moral certainties and the Production Code's limits on screen violence gave way.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a western about time running out, where the men's skills and code are already obsolete.
