Horror
British
1973 · Directed by Robin Hardy · 93 min
A devout, by-the-book police sergeant flies to a remote Scottish island to find a missing girl. The islanders are courteous, cheerful and strangely unhelpful, and their way of life clashes with everything he believes. It is a mystery, a musical and a horror film in one.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of British folk horror, and a key example of the genre's turn from gothic studio fantasy to the unsettling English and Scottish countryside of the early 1970s.
Watch with intention
Treat it as a duel between two complete belief systems, and notice how each side presents itself and how you feel about each.
