French (Le Salaire de la peur)
1953 · Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot · 154 min
In a squalid Latin American town where foreigners are stranded without money or papers, a distant oil fire creates a desperate job: drive two trucks of unstable explosive over brutal roads. The film is a study of heat, poverty and nerves, then a slow-burning thriller.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of European suspense cinema in the early 1950s, it showed that a thriller could be grim, adult and politically edged while still working as pure, relentless entertainment.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an experiment in time: how a director makes you feel a place before making you fear a road.
