Truman Burbank sells insurance in Seahaven, a sunlit island town where every neighbour is friendly and every day runs smoothly. Small cracks in that order begin to bother him. A bright satirical comedy that slowly takes on a more unsettling and moving tone.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining late-1990s film about television, surveillance and manufactured reality, it turned an old philosophical idea into a mainstream parable that still frames how people discuss media and privacy.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as a story about who is looking, and notice how often the frame itself seems to be someone else's point of view.
