A Texas family in the 1950s: a stern father, a gentle mother and three boys growing up in a quiet suburb. Malick tells their story through memory, whispered prayer and images of nature and the cosmos, more like a poem or a piece of music than a conventional drama.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of 21st-century art cinema, it carried the poetic, non-narrative tradition of Tarkovsky and Kubrick's 2001 into a star-led film that reached a wide audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a memory or a prayer, where images connect by feeling and association rather than by cause and effect.
