A US research crew at an Antarctic station takes in a stray dog chased by a helicopter from a nearby Norwegian camp. Soon the isolated men face something that doesn't fit what they know, and they start to doubt one another. John Carpenter's film is a study of suspicion, played out in a very cold place.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of early-1980s horror and science fiction, and the high point of the practical, tactile creature effects that digital imagery would soon displace.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about trust, where faces, glances and staging matter as much as the creature.
