Horror
American
1974 · Directed by Tobe Hooper · 83 min
Five young friends driving through rural Texas on a summer day stop at a remote old family property and the farmhouses nearby. What they find there turns an ordinary road trip into something raw, relentless and disturbingly close to documentary in feel.
Why it matters in cinema history
A pivotal film in the shift from gothic, supernatural horror to grounded, contemporary American horror, and a key work of independent, low-budget filmmaking outside the studio system.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study in how sound, pacing and a sense of dread can frighten more than anything shown on screen.
