A young Texas couple, desperate to get their baby back from foster care, set off across the state with a police car and a hostage in tow. What begins as a runaway comedy turns into a long procession of pursuit, curiosity and sympathy.
Why it matters in cinema history
An early landmark of the New Hollywood generation, and the film that shows the Spielberg style forming before his blockbuster era, with its cinematic action and its interest in ordinary people.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a chase film in which the pursuers and the pursued gradually become one shared public spectacle.
