Drama
Italian (La stanza del figlio)
2001 · Directed by Nanni Moretti · 99 min
A psychoanalyst in a coastal Italian city spends his days listening to other people's troubles, while his own household seems comfortable and warm. A quiet, observant family drama about what happens to ordinary routines when the ground shifts beneath them.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining Italian film of the early 2000s and the one that brought Moretti, previously better known at home, to a wide international audience. It shows the European art-house family drama at its most plain-spoken.
