The Silent World
French (Le Monde du silence)
1956 · Directed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau & Louis Malle · 86 min
In the early 1950s, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his crew sail the research ship Calypso through the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. They carry the new aqualung and cameras built to follow them below the surface. The film is part voyage log, part nature study, and it shows a world most audiences had never seen.
