A young FBI trainee is sent to interview an imprisoned psychiatrist who is also a notorious killer. The agency hopes his insight will help catch another murderer who is still at large. A tense, intimate thriller built around conversations as much as pursuit.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 1990s serial-killer thriller, it moved a genre once treated as lurid pulp into the mainstream of prestige filmmaking and awards recognition.
