A struggling writer takes a winter caretaker job at a vast, remote mountain hotel, bringing his wife and young son. Stanley Kubrick turns Stephen King's novel into a slow, formal, unsettling study of space, silence and unease.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the auteur horror film, it showed that genre material could carry a director's full formal ambition and that audiences would return to a film for its ambiguity.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about space: how the camera, the sets and the sound make a building feel like a presence.
