Swedish (Det sjunde inseglet)
1957 · Directed by Ingmar Bergman · 96 min
A knight returns from the Crusades to a Sweden ravaged by plague, and Death comes for him. He asks for a chess game to buy time, and travels on through a land of fear, faith and fragile ordinary life. A stark, sometimes funny medieval parable.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of European art cinema in the 1950s, it showed that a philosophical, personal film from a small country could reach audiences worldwide and shape how later filmmakers approached big questions.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a medieval parable staged like a painting, where each image stands for an idea as well as a place.
