Argentine (El secreto de sus ojos)
2009 · Directed by Juan José Campanella · 130 min
In 1999 Buenos Aires, a retired court investigator tries to write a novel about a brutal crime he worked on in 1974. As he returns to old files and an old colleague, the case, and a love he never spoke of, refuse to stay in the past. A thriller, a romance and a portrait of obsession.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining Argentine film of the post-2000 revival, it joined genre storytelling to the memory of the 1970s in the manner of its country's cinema, and brought that mix to a global audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about memory: how the older Benjamín shapes, doubts and rewrites the past as he tries to put it into words.
