Drama
Spanish (Mar adentro)
2004 · Directed by Alejandro Amenábar · 126 min
In a farmhouse on the Galician coast, a former sailor who has been bedridden for decades asks the law to let him die. The film follows the people who orbit his bed (family, a lawyer, a local woman) and the argument between his certainty and their love.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of early-2000s Spanish cinema and one of the most widely seen dramatizations of the assisted-dying debate, helping to bring a real Galician case to an international audience.
