1982 · Directed by Yılmaz Güney & Şerif Gören · 110 min
Five Turkish prisoners are given a week's leave and scatter across a country living under military rule. Each carries a private burden toward home, family and a world that has changed while they were locked away. The tone is patient, bleak and humane, closer to a set of journeys than a single plot.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of committed political cinema from outside Europe and America, and one of the first films from Turkey to win major international recognition. Its making belongs to the history of cinema under censorship and exile.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as five separate journeys, and ask what each landscape, family and checkpoint takes from the man who passes through it.
