Montana, 1925. Two wealthy brothers run a vast cattle ranch until one of them marries a widow and brings her and her delicate son into the house. Jane Campion's slow, tense Western is about power, taste and who gets to count as a man.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the twenty-first-century revisionist Western, and an example of a streaming-era release that kept the scale and patience of art cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as a study of power exercised in small, everyday ways: through tone, posture, sound and who controls a room.
