Spanish (El hoyo)
2019 · Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia · 95 min
A man wakes in a bare concrete cell in a vertical prison, where a platform of food descends one level at a time. Those on the upper floors eat first, and those below get what is left. A grim, allegorical thriller built on one stark idea.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the low-budget, high-concept social-allegory thriller that flourished in the late 2010s, alongside Parasite, and a key piece of recent Spanish genre cinema.

Treat the setting as a diagram, and ask what each rule of this world is arguing about how people behave.
