German (Die unendliche Geschichte)
1984 · Directed by Wolfgang Petersen · 101 min
A lonely, bullied boy hides in a school attic with a mysterious old book. As he reads, he finds a fantasy world under threat from a spreading emptiness, and a young hero sent to stop it. A children's adventure with a surprisingly melancholy undertone.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1980s family fantasy and the high point of German-produced international spectacle in that decade, it stands among the last great fantasy worlds built entirely by physical craft.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about what stories do for the person absorbing them, not just as an adventure.
