1986 · Directed by Roland Joffé · 125 min
In the mid-18th century, a Spanish Jesuit climbs above a vast waterfall in South America to build a mission among the Guaraní. The film sets spiritual conviction against empire and profit, with spectacular landscapes and an unforgettable score.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 1980s British revival of prestige historical drama, and a late example of the epic used for moral and political debate rather than pure spectacle.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an argument about conscience and power, carried by landscape and music as much as by dialogue.
