Trevor Reznik, a factory machinist, has not slept in a year and has withered to a skeleton. When a stranger starts appearing at the edges of his life and small, unsettling things begin to happen, exhaustion and dread close in. A cold, stylish psychological thriller.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key example of the mid-2000s psychological thriller, and a landmark in the tradition of actors reshaping their bodies for a role, anchored by one of the most discussed performances of Bale's career.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study in atmosphere: how body, colour and sound build a mood of exhaustion before the plot explains anything.
