The war for Middle-earth reaches its decisive stage as armies gather and old alliances are tested. Far from the battlefields, two small travellers carry the story's smallest and heaviest burden. A large-scale fantasy epic, earnest in tone and built on friendship, endurance and sacrifice.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of early twenty-first century blockbuster cinema, it showed that fantasy could be treated with the seriousness and scale once reserved for historical epics.
Watch with intention
Watch how a story of armies and kingdoms keeps returning to small, human-scale faces and gestures.
