Drama
French (Une aussi longue absence)
1961 · Directed by Henri Colpi · 98 min
In a Paris suburb, a café owner runs her business and her quiet routines, still marked by the disappearance of her husband years before. One summer a drifter passes through the street, and something about him unsettles her. A restrained drama about memory, waiting and recognition.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of the Left Bank current around the French New Wave, it turns the modernist treatment of memory and trauma from Resnais and Duras into a quiet, humane drama.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about how much a face, a street and a silence can say when the characters will not say it.
