A young lion cub grows up in the African savanna, adored by his father the king and eager for the throne he is born to inherit. Not everyone in the kingdom welcomes him. Disney's 2019 retelling of its own animated story, rendered in photographic realism.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of Disney's late-2010s strategy of re-making its animated classics, and a showcase for virtual production techniques that filmmakers have since expanded.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an experiment: how far can realism go before animals lose the expressiveness a story needs?
