On the African savanna, a young lion prince grows up in the shadow of a great kingdom and an ambitious uncle. Part coming-of-age story, part family tragedy, part song-driven spectacle, it plays like a fable about duty and growing up, told with hand-drawn animation at its most confident.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the Disney Renaissance and a high-water mark of traditional hand-drawn feature animation just before computer animation took over the mainstream.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a piece of musical theatre in which every song moves the story forward rather than pausing it.
