Two men are assigned to tend a lighthouse on a small, storm-battered rock off the New England coast in the 1890s. One is a gruff veteran, the other a newcomer, and the work, the weather and each other's company begin to wear on them. A claustrophobic two-hander shot in black and white.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 2010s art-house horror cycle. It is also one of the clearest recent examples of a filmmaker deliberately reviving the visual grammar of early cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of two men and one confined space, where setting, sound and performance matter more than plot.
