A Warner Bros. biography of the French novelist Émile Zola, followed from his hungry youth in Paris to his years as a celebrated and comfortable author. When a scandal of national scale reaches him, the film asks what a writer owes to the truth once his reputation is secure.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central title of Hollywood's late-1930s run of liberal historical biographies, it showed that a studio could win the industry's top prize with a film about political injustice and the duty of intellectuals.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a studio-era argument about conscience: how the film makes comfort, reputation and duty compete inside one man.
