Drama · War
Swiss (Die letzte Chance)
1945 · Directed by Leopold Lindtberg · 113 min
Italy, after the 1943 armistice, with German forces occupying the north. Two Allied soldiers on the run head for the Swiss border and find themselves responsible for a mixed group of civilians who also need to get out. A multilingual wartime drama, made in neutral Switzerland while the war was still being fought.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of Swiss postwar cinema and an early example of the humanist, semi-documentary style that Europe would take up after 1945, close in spirit to Italian neorealism.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about a group forming, where every language, nationality and rank has to be negotiated on the road.
