1965 · Directed by Richard Lester · 85 min
In a bustling, sunlit London, a timid schoolteacher wants to learn how to attract women from his confident lodger, while an eccentric artist downstairs paints everything white. Then a young woman arrives from the country. A quick, playful, black-and-white comedy about the mating games of the mid-1960s.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining comedy of Swinging London and a key example of how New Wave techniques entered mainstream British film, helping establish Lester's fast, fragmented style that later shaped pop-era filmmaking.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a comedy told through editing: the jokes live as much in the cuts and the sound as in the dialogue.
