French (Intouchables)
2011 · Directed by Éric Toledano & Olivier Nakache · 113 min
A wealthy Parisian who has lost the use of his body hires a live-in carer from the other end of French society, a young man with no qualifications and no interest in pity. What follows is a comedy of mismatched worlds, built on friendship and irreverence rather than solemnity.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the 2010s French feel-good comedy, which brought the buddy-film formula to a story of disability and class. It became one of the most internationally successful French films of its time.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a comedy of class and manners, where the humour comes from two people ignoring what each is supposed to be.
