Dublin, 1922, during the Irish civil unrest. Gypo Nolan, a big, slow-witted, penniless former IRA man, drifts through fog-bound streets and cheap bars, desperate for money and a way out. One night's decision sets the rest of the film in motion.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key example of 1930s Hollywood absorbing European Expressionist style, and a film that gave Ford the artistic standing to move between genre pictures and personal projects.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a stylised studio nightmare, in which light, fog and music express Gypo's state of mind more than the dialogue does.
