South Korean (하녀)
1960 · Directed by Kim Ki-young · 112 min
A composer, his hard-working wife and their children move into a new two-storey house in postwar Seoul. A young woman is hired to help with the housework, and the household's careful order begins to feel less secure. A feverish domestic thriller with an unsettling tone.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of Korea's early-1960s cinema and the work that made Kim Ki-young a cult auteur. It shaped the Korean domestic-thriller tradition that leads towards Parasite.
