In 1920s England, a wealthy widow recovering from a long period of grief and illness hires a chauffeur, a former soldier with a stiff sense of his own dignity. Quiet, restrained and watchful, it is a drama built from drives, doorways and the unspoken rules between employer and employee.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late, refined example of the British literary adaptation that treated class as its central subject, made as the genre was moving from the stage-bound drama of earlier decades towards a more observant, television-trained realism.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about social distance: who stands where, who may speak first, and who must wait to be addressed.
