French (Le Rayon vert)
1986 · Directed by Éric Rohmer · 99 min
Delphine, a young Parisian secretary, finds her August holiday plans have collapsed at the last minute. She drifts between seaside towns, mountains and well-meaning friends, unable to relax into other people's idea of a good summer. A quiet, funny, exposed portrait of loneliness.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining late work of Rohmer's talk-driven, naturalistic cinema, and one of the clearest examples of how the French New Wave's low-budget methods matured into a distinct, durable style.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of someone who cannot perform contentment, and notice how patiently the film lets her awkwardness play out.
