1903 · Directed by Edwin S. Porter · 12 min
A gang of outlaws sets out to hold up a steam train in the American West, and a posse gathers to hunt them down. Told in about twelve minutes and no spoken or written dialogue, it is an early, fast-moving crime story built entirely from action.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the transition from one-shot novelties to multi-scene storytelling, and an early blueprint for the Western and the action chase in American cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch it as an experiment in how much story shots can carry when no one speaks and nothing is written.
