In a German prison camp built to hold the Allies' most persistent escape artists, a group of airmen begins planning something far bigger than a single breakout. It is a long, sociable, often funny war film that turns patient preparation into adventure.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of the 1960s Hollywood war adventure, it moved the POW story from wartime drama toward star-driven, ensemble spectacle and fixed a template many caper and mission films would follow.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about work and temperament: how an organisation of very different men is built, one small job at a time.
