Drama
Italian (La grande bellezza)
2013 · Directed by Paolo Sorrentino · 142 min
Jep Gambardella, a charming writer and chronicler of Roman high society, turns sixty-five and begins to look at his city and his own life with new, wearier eyes. A drifting, sensuous portrait of parties, ruins, churches and rooftops, half satire and half elegy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining Italian art film of the 2010s, it revived the grand Fellini tradition of the decadent, searching urban portrait for a new century and a new audience.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a series of moods and tableaux rather than a plot, with Rome itself as the main subject.
