During the Depression, an Oklahoma tenant-farming family loses its land and sets out west in a battered truck, hoping for work and a home in California. John Ford turns Steinbeck's bestseller into a stark, humane road story about endurance, dignity and a country that doesn't quite know what to do with its poor.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of Hollywood social realism, it showed that a studio film could carry political anger and sympathy for the poor without giving up classical craft or mass appeal.
Watch with intention
Watch how Ford makes a vast social crisis personal by keeping the camera close to one family's faces and small gestures.
